A headache behind the eye is known as a cluster headache, according to WebMD. The term refers to a category of headache that recurs in "clusters" of several times per day over weeks or months.

Cluster headaches are the most severe among several primary types of headaches, WebMD notes. The headaches affect fewer than one in every 1,000 people. Sufferers are typically younger than 30, and women are affected more than men. The cause is not known but is linked to activation of a nerve path in the brain. The pain is typically located behind one eye or near the eye and does not change sides. The headaches often disappear for months or years.
