Why did I get light pink spotting instead of my period?

Light-colored spotting in place of a menstrual period is a common sign of implantation bleeding, the process that occurs when a fertilized egg adheres to the lining of the uterus, according to the American Pregnancy Association. Women often mistake implantation bleeding for menstruation.
Implantation bleeding can begin as soon as nine days following conception, according to Healthline. Cramps and increased urination may also accompany the bleeding. Additional symptoms of early pregnancy include abdominal bloating, tiredness, a metallic taste in the mouth and nausea. Nausea is often referred to as morning sickness; however, the symptoms can occur at any time throughout the day or evening.
