A liver ultrasound is used to examine the liver if a patient is experiencing pain, swelling or other abnormalities, notes Two Views. It can be used to detect cysts, obstructions or infections in the liver as well as to check for cancer.

Liver ultrasounds are regularly given to patients suffering from hepatitis B or C in order to monitor the progression of the disease, particularly determining the extent of scarring on the liver, notes Live Science. A liver ultrasound can also be used during surgery to help guide the surgeons during a procedure such as a biopsy. They are also frequently used post-surgery to ensure that the patient’s body is responding well to treatment.
