According to SFGate, an adult's recommended daily intake of carbohydrates when following a 2,000 calorie diet is between 225 and 325 grams. A well-balanced diet includes between 45 and 65 percent of carbohydrates.
SFGate further recommends that healthy carbohydrates, such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, low fat milk and low fat yogurt, compose most of one's daily carb intake. Carbohydrates to avoid include refined grains and sugars. It is advisable for adult males to limit their daily sugar to less than 9 teaspoons and for adult females to limit theirs to less than 6 teaspoons. Because carbs are the primary source of energy for the body, most of a person's caloric intake needs to consist of carbs.
