Heart flutters are also referred to as atrial flutters and are caused by abnormal impulses sent by the sinus node to the right atrium of the heart, according to WebMD. The sinus node is often referred to as the heart's natural pacemaker, as it is responsible for maintaining balanced contractions.

Risk factors for atrial flutters include heart disease, caffeine consumption, anxiety and medications that interfere with the heart's electrical impulses, according to NYU Langone Medical Center. With proper treatment, heart flutters are not usually considered life-threatening, but the condition can put people at higher risk for strokes and blood clots.
