A heat pump thermostat is generally rectangular in shape and has either a physical or digital display through which the temperature and functions of a heat pump can be managed. The basic functionality of a thermostat is similar to that of a power switch that controls an appliance.

A heat pump thermostat is connected to a central HVAC system, allowing it to turn on its four distinct parts. The parts of a HVAC system generally includes a compressor, furnace, outdoor fan and an indoor blower. To function, a heat pump thermostat typically only activates a furnace and the indoor blower to generate heat.
