India is located within both the Eastern Hemisphere, like the rest of Asia, and the Northern Hemisphere. India is considered part of the South Asia region, and it is the seventh-largest country in the world by geographical size.
India is the second-most-populous country in the world with more than 1.2 billion people, very close to China's 1.36 billion. Its sizable population also makes India the world's highest-populated democracy. It is considered a regional power and has achieved nuclear weapons capabilities. India's standing army is the third largest in the world. India won its independence from the United Kingdom in 1947.
