The Indian Ocean is mainly located in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the third largest of the world's five oceans and covers about 20 percent of the world's total oceanic area.
The majority of the Southern Hemisphere is water with less than 20 percent of the area made up of land. The continents include the southern third of Africa, a majority of South America, and all of Australia and Antarctica. Bodies of water in the Southern Hemisphere include the South Atlantic and South Pacific Oceans as well as a number of smaller seas, such as the Coral Sea and Timor Sea near Australia.
