The Philippines are located in both the Northern and the Eastern Hemispheres. The Pacific Ocean completely surrounds the 7,107 islands that make up the Philippines.
The Philippines are the seventh most populated country in Asia with a population of more than 100 million people. The country is usually hot and humid due to its tropical maritime climate. Three groups of islands comprise the Philippine chain: the Luzon, the Visayas and the Mindanao. These island groups are further divided into 17 regions. The islands are mountainous and experience frequent seismic and volcanic activity. An average of 20 earthquakes are registered daily.
