According to the Worldmark Encyclopedia of Nations, the Republic of the Philippines is an archipelago located southeast of mainland Asia and is separated from it by the South China Sea. The Republic is comprised of 7,107 islands.
The Republic of the Philippines is bordered by the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Celebes Sea to the south, the Sulu sea to the southwest and the South China sea to the west. Nearby countries include Taiwan and Malaysia. Sixty-seven percent of the Philippines' land area is made up by Luzon and Mindanao, the two largest islands in the Republic. Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, Masbate, Mindoro, Negros, Palawan, Panay and Samar are among the other major islands.
