Numerous scientific studies have investigated essiac as an anticancer treatment on both animal models and cultured cancer cells and concluded there wasn't sufficient evidence that essiac has potential as a cancer treatment, says WebMD. Furthermore, patients taking essiac may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting and flu-like symptoms.

Essiac is a herbal tea mixture that is composed of four herbs: burdock root, Indian rhubarb root, sheep sorrel and slippery elm bark, according to WebMD. Essiac has been promoted by some as an alternative treatment for cancer. There have been no clinical studies on the anticancer affects of essiac in human subjects.
