Herbal plants grown in the Philippines include tsaang gubat, or wild tea; yerba buena, or peppermint; ampalaya, or bitter melon; and sambong or camphor. Tsaang gubat is drunk as a tea to alleviate eczema, scabies and itchiness.

Yerba buena tea is used for cough and colds, stomach ache, headache and toothache. A poultice is applied for rheumatism, arthritis and insect bites.

Ampalaya proves effective when treating hemorrhoids, coughs and burns, and it is being studied for its potential anti-cancer properties.

Sambong is taken internally as a diuretic to treat hypertension and fluid retention. The Philippine National Kidney and Transplant Institute recommends taking it for renal problems. It also exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties.
