Are hippo tears red?

Hippo tears are not red. Like most mammals, the hippo expels clear tears. However, the area around the hippo's eyes are pink, leading the tears to appear to have a reddish tint.
Hippos are massive mammals that weigh around 4,000 pounds and live near rivers and lakes in central and southern Africa. Because hippos have very dry skin, they live near these bodies of water where they can keep their bodies comfortable and hydrated. Although hippo tears are not red, hippos do secrete a red substance to protect their skin from the sun and bacteria. On average, the life expectancy of the hippo is 55 years.
