Who invented the keyboard?

Christopher Latham Sholes invented the first practical keyboard. It was manufactured by Remington and Sons in 1874 and was called the Remington Number 1. It was the first commercially successful typewriter keyboard built.

Sholes' design was the first to feature the QWERTY keyboard. While designing the typewriter, he struggled with the metal bars jamming with each other. His solution was to move the most common letters away from one another, since they were most often used. Sholes' design is still the most popular in keyboards and has become the standard.
