Who succeeded King Tut to the throne?

King Tut's close confidant Ay succeeded him to the throne. King Ay rose through the ranks of civil and military service until he became king. His reign was short, lasting only from 1323 to 1319 BCE.

Ay's first appearance in history was as a member of the court of Akhenaton. His primary title, God’s Father, is an indication of his close relationship with the royal family. Upon Akhenaton’s death, Ay became an elder statesman to the newly anointed King Tut. It is unclear how Ay was able to take over upon King Tut's death. After the death of King Ay, the general Horemheb took over the throne.
