Who was the successor of King Darius?

King Darius was succeeded on the throne by his son Xerxes. Darius the Great, as he was known, passed the reigns of the Persian Empire to his son around 486 B.C.
Xerxes was the oldest son of King Darius' first wife and one of the 18 children that he conceived. Since Xerxes was the first son of Darius' wife Atossa, he was put directly into the line of succession, even though he was not actually Darius' first-born son. Xerxes' reign was filled with action, as he first suppressed an Egyptian revolt before moving on to fight in the Persian Wars against the Greeks. Xerxes is prominently featured in the movie "300: Rise of an Empire," which describes his encounters with the Greeks.
