Hoarseness can be an early sign of lung cancer, states Healthline. Although a raspy voice is often a symptom of the common cold, it should be checked by a doctor if it continues for longer than two weeks.
Lung cancer causes hoarseness when the tumor interferes with the nerve connected to the larynx. A new, persistent cough is a possible symptom of lung cancer, according to Healthline. If a chronic cough becomes more mucousy, hoarser or bloody, it also should get checked. Shortness of breath and wheezing sometimes point to lung cancer, as do chest pain, unexplained weight loss and bone pain. However, lung cancer often does not produce early warning signs.
