The Howdy Doody marionette is a stringed puppet who "starred" in television's first network weekday show for children. "The Howdy Doody Show" ran on NBC from 1947 to 1960, and the name "Howdy Doody" originated from the show's cowboy theme.

The character was created by Bob Smith, and the actual marionette used for most of the show's tenure was created by Velma Dawson. The puppet is 27 inches tall and has large ears, red hair and 48 freckles, representing the 48 states in the nation when the show began. He is dressed in a checked shirt and jeans and wears a bandanna. Howdy Doody has a bronze star on NBC's Walk of Fame.
