Are greeting cards recyclable?

Greeting cards made of paper are recyclable, including cards made of shiny paper and heavy card stock. Prior to recycling the cards, consumers must remove any glitter, ribbons, foil, metal decorations and battery-operated devices that deliver messages or play music upon opening the cards.

Other ways to recycle greeting cards include removing the covers of the cards and using them to make new cards or cutting up the cards and using them to create craft projects, such as gift tags, bookmarks and ornaments. Some charities, such as St. Jude's Ranch for Children, accept donations of used greeting cards, make new cards using the covers of the old cards, and sell them to raise money to support their programs.
