How many turkeys are sold for Thanksgiving?

While it is difficult to know exactly how many turkeys are sold for Thanksgiving, estimates figure that Americans purchase about 46 million turkeys each year in preparation for the holiday also known as Turkey Day. Some critics point out that the 46 million figure is based on total sales for the month of November, meaning that at least some of these turkeys could be used for non-Thanksgiving purposes.

Though there seems to be some debate about Thanksgiving turkey consumption, one undisputable fact is that most Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving. According to the National Turkey Federation, about 88 percent of Americans report having consumed turkey on Thanksgiving.
