What is home economics?

Home economics is the field of study dealing with the management of the home and its place in the broader community. In the past, home economics, known to many simply as home ec, was strictly concerned with traditional homemaking and taught only to girls. Today, the field encompasses a broader range of topics and is more often called family and consumer sciences.

Home economics is generally taught at the elementary and secondary school level. A typical curriculum covers:

  • Child development and guidance
  • Consumer education
  • Family living and parenting education
  • Fashion, textiles and apparel
  • Food and nutrition
  • Housing and furnishings
  • Individual and family health
  • Leadership development
