One technique for overseeding is to mow the existing grass as short as possible before sowing grass seed both horizontally and vertically. Rates for overseeding appear on the grass seed package; sow the grass seed by hand or with a spreader.
Aerate properties with compacted soil prior to sowing grass seed, and sow the seeds during a part of the fall when temperatures range from 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure the seed establishes before cold weather. Alternately, sow Bermuda grass when temperatures range from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit by loosening the soil to a depth of 6 inches prior to seeding.
