Feral hogs are considered non-game animals by the Texas Parks and Wildlife department and therefore have no closed season. A state-issued hunting license, however, is required to hunt them, states the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Feral hogs are a popular trophy hunt because of their long tusks and mean appearance. Their meat is also much leaner than pen-raised pork and quite tasty to eat. The meat can be prepared using methods similar to those used with market hogs. Feral hogs can carry a number of diseases and host various parasites. Though these conditions pose no real threat to humans, precautions should be taken to avoid exposing domestic livestock and pets, notes the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
