What are hurricane panels?

Hurricane shutters, also called storm shutters or hurricane panel systems, are exterior window coverings used to protect windows from flying debris during heavy storm conditions. Though storm panels are typically made from aluminum or steel, some homeowners choose to use plywood as a less expensive option.
Storm panels require pre-installed channels both above and below windows prior to use. Panels need to be stored away when not in use and are quite large and cumbersome to install.
Automatic roll-down shutters, Bahama shutters, accordion shutters and awning shutters are alternative options to storm panels. A description of each type of shutter is available at AOML.NOAA.gov.
