What do hyenas eat?

Hyenas are scavengers and often eat the scraps that other predators leave behind, but they also hunt their own prey. They hunt large animals, such as wildebeests and antelope, as well as smaller species, such as birds, snakes, lizards and insects.

When hunting, hyenas work together as a pack to separate a weak member from the rest of the herd and take it down. They use their sharp hearing and eyesight to hunt at night, and they are able to run for long distances in order to keep up with the herd. Hyena habitats are being invaded by human populations, and hyenas have also been known to raid stores and eat farmers' crops.
