What is an ice cream maker?

An ice cream maker is an electric or manual device used to make ice cream in a home kitchen. The main parts of an ice cream maker include the paddle, canister and outer container, which holds the freezing agent.

Freezing agents that are used in ice cream makers may include a chemical coolant enclosed in the walls of the outer container or salt and ice. Some models feature an electric refrigerating unit that freezes the ice cream. A manual ice cream maker requires a person to turn the paddle, whereas the paddle on an electric ice cream maker turns using electricity. The paddle works to make smooth ice cream that is free of ice crystals.
