What are the ideal growing conditions for lupine flowers?

Lupine flowers, also known as Lupinus polyphyllus, grow easily in cool and moist areas. They prefer well-drained average soil that receives full sun to light shade.

Lupine flowers grow long taproots down to 20 inches and benefit from pre-loosened soil. Due to the taproot, transplanting is not recommended. Grow lupines from cuttings, divisions, or seeds sown in autumn. Refrigerate seeds for a week before planting to increase germination. Use an organic phosphorus-rich fertilizer to improve the bloom.

Lupine is a perennial that blooms in flower spikes of 1 to 4 feet. It occurs as a wildflower in the northern United States.
