The Battle of Yorktown is considered to be the most important battle in the revolutionary war. George Washington led a contingent of American and French troops against British commander Lord Charles Cornwallis in what would be the deciding battle of the war.
Lord Corwallis choose Yorktown as his base at a time that the French fleet under Francois Count de Grasse was closing in on the Chesapeake Bay. The bay is at the mouth of Yorktown, making it an ideal situation for Washington to strike.
General Washington blocked Cornwallis' escape by land while the French fleet blocked it by sea. After a three-week battle, Corwallis surrendered to Washington, a move that ended the war after 6 years.
