Halite is commonly used to salt icy and snowy roads during the winter to help control further accumulation. Additionally, halite is salt, which means it is also an integral seasoning in cooking, used for preserving foods and is an essential nutrient to include in the diet.
Halite, or rock salt as it is commonly known, forms in arid climates where either inland lakes or ocean water evaporates. The Dead Sea, which lies between Israel and Jordan, and the Great Salt Lake in Utah are two examples of inland lakes where halite forms. When halite is harvested, it is then crushed and used for its various purposes.
