When are induction motors used?

The induction motor is a type of motor most often used in industrial applications that need an alternating current as a power source. Because of its design and function, an induction motor does not require mechanical commutation.
An induction motor is an AC electric motor in which the electric current in the rotor needed to produce torque is induced by electromagnetic induction from a magnetic field. This type of simplified motor will turn once it is started in motion, but has no starting torque of its own. Various techniques are used to produce some asymmetry in the magnetic fields to provide the motor with the starting torque that it needs.
