Inside the Taj Mahal is a mausoleum for Shah Jahan and his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan created the Taj Mahal to bury his wife who died in childbirth.
The Taj Mahal contains a mausoleum, tomb chambers and various rooms that are closed to the public. The walls inside the building are decorated with calligraphy and elaborate floral carvings embellished with gemstones. Mumtaz Mahal means "chosen one of the palace," which is how the Shah referred to his favorite wife; her real name was Arjumand Banu Begam and she was a Persian princess. The Taj Mahal is one of the eight wonders of the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
