What inspired Michelangelo to be an artist?

Michelangelo was primarily a self-inspired artist, but he drew his reference from many great artists, including Ghiberti, Ghilandaio and Giovanni. His father disapproved of his ambitions to become an artist. Instead, he hoped he would grow up and become a small-scale banker like many generations of men in his family before him.

Michelangelo's most famous painting was his work on the Sistine Chapel. The artist worked on the chapel ceiling from 1508 until 1512. Two other famous artists painted during the same time period as Michelangelo: Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. All three artists had a huge influence on sculptors, painters and architects during this time period and for many centuries to come.
