How do you install iOS 7 on an iPod Touch?

Installing iOS 7 can be done wirelessly by selecting the Settings menu, followed by General, then Software update. The update will then download, followed by an installation prompt once it is complete. This method will also work for an iPad 2, and iPhone 4 and above.

Updating wirelessly is convenient, but before installing be sure to check the following:

  1. Only the fifth generation of the iPod Touch is able to install iOS 7, earlier models will not be compatible with the software.
  2. The iPod Touch should be plugged in to a power source to ensure the device is fully powered throughout the download and installation process.
  3. Before installing, all data should be backed up. This can be done via iTunes or the iCloud, and will prevent data loss in the event of any problems.
  4. Installation and backup can also be done via any Apple computer, using a direct cable connection between the devices.

It is also possible to downgrade from a higher iOS to iOS 7, although this process is not directly supported by Apple. This can be done by connecting the device to a computer, and locating the iOS device in iTunes, just to the left of the iTunes Store button. Hold the option key, then click restore.
