To install trim on a pocket door, first measure, cut and attach the framing around the top jamb and pocket sides, and then measure, cut and attach the exterior casing. When attaching the casing, use glue or short finish nails to avoid scratching the door while it is in use.
To install trim on a pocket door:
- Measure
- Cut and attach the side jambs
- Attach the header
- Cut and attach the solid jambs
- Install the casing
Start by measuring the height of both sides of the side jamb and cut a 1 by 4-inch to that height. Then measure the depth of the frame to the drywall, which is usually 1-1/4 inches wide.
Cut a piece of trim lengthwise to accommodate the frame's depth plus drywall. Then drill pilot holes and screw this piece flush with the inside of the pocket door frame.
Measure the length of the top of the pocket door frame on both sides, and then measure the width from the frame to the wall. Cut and rip a 1 by 4-inch board to these measurements and screw it to the jambs.
On the solid side of the frame, measure the height and width of the opening. Then cut and rip a 1 by 4-inch board to these measurements and screw it to the frame.
Measure and cut the trim for around the outside of the door, starting with the top and then working to the sides. Attach the casing with glue or short finish nails.
