Salvatore Ferrara created the first jawbreaker candies. Ferrara was an immigrant to the United States from Italy. He also founded one of the most successful non-chocolate candy companies, the Ferrara Pan Candy Company.
Ferrara started this company with his two brothers in 1919. After arriving in the United States in 1900, he worked many other jobs before he was able to afford a small pastry shop. There, he made chocolate-covered almonds that became so popular that he started a company to make them. He and his brothers went on to create candies such as Jaw Busters, Boston Baked Beans, Lemonheads and Red Hots.
