Who invented insulation?

While the first person to use insulation is not specifically known, the history of insulation goes back to the early days of humanity. Prehistoric man built shelters using the organic materials around them to provide protection from the elements, similar to the way modern insulation protects a home's inhabitants.
Insulation, defined as a material that slows the transfer of heat and sound, is generally placed inside building walls to offer a barrier between the building's interior and the outside. This not only helps regulate the internal temperature of the building, but it provides a soundproofing quality to help keep out external noises as well.
