Potato chips were the invention of George Crum, a Native American chef working in Sarasota Springs, New York, at a resort where a patron complained about French fries being too thick; Crum sliced the replacement order particularly thing in an attempt to exact revenge on the complaining guest and the potato chip was born. The diner loved the chips.
Although Crum never patented his creation, his chips were a big hit and diners began to request them. They were initially known as Saratoga chips and were sometimes called potato crisps. Crum went on to open his own eatery a few years later, and every table in the establishment was topped with a basket of chips.
