Who invented rubber tires?

John Boyd Dunlop, a British veterinary surgeon who lived in Belfast, invented the first rubber tire for his son, who in 1888 was prescribed cycling as a cure for his cold.
Dunlop thought that if he used inflated tubes on his son's tricycle, it would make for a more comfortable ride. Dunlop attached rubber hoses with canvas patches to the wooden tricycle and then added liquid rubber after a test run to prevent skidding. Dunlop also coined the term "pneumatic" in the same year he patented his invention. The pneumatic tire eventually began to gain recognition after local cyclist Willie Hume won a bicycle race using pneumatic tires in 1889.
