Who invented the skyscraper?

The first skyscraper in the world was the Home Insurance Building located in Chicago and was designed by Major William LeBaron Jenney. The building was completed in 1885 and was 10 stories tall. Jenney was the first to use a steel framework that supported a buildings entire weight.

This first skyscraper prompted more architects to adopt the construction style, which was known as a "Chicago skeleton." The Home Insurance Building is no longer standing, having been demolished in 1931. It was replaced by the Field Building, which is the LaSalle Bank Building as of 2014. Also in 1931, construction finished on the Empire State Building.
