It is unknown who the exact inventor of the sofa was; the initial designs and models were invented in England and France around the late 17th century. One of the earliest surviving sofas originates from England and is thought to have been made in 1690s.
Although no early French sofas survive, there are prints that date from 1686 that show a low-backed sofa called the canap?. Several other sofa designs were also invented in France during the 1680s and 1690s, including a lightly padded double armchair style and a design that featured a carved frame with rounded upholstery that increased both comfort and support.
