The invention of the electric fan is attributed to Schuyler Skaats Wheeler in 1882. This rudimentary fan was fundamentally a blade that was attached to an electric motor.
A typical hand fan was perhaps invented by the Egyptians who used lotus leaves to fan their faces. China's Ming Dynasty is responsible for hand-painted Asian fans, which gained popularity when they were brought to Europe in the 1400s. In 1889, the ceiling fan was invented, and by 1953, the invention of the electric fan had led to air conditioning. Sales of air conditioning units in 1952 surpassed the one million mark.
