The inventor of yarn cannot be determined because yarn dates back to at least 20,000 years ago. Some of the earliest examples of a yarn-like material are ancient string skirts made from plant and animal fibers. Yarn has been used throughout history and by many cultures.
There have been many changes to the making of yarn through the centuries. The earliest tool was the spindle upon which yarn was wound by hand as it was braided. Later centuries saw the creation of the spinning wheel and loom, which offered quicker and larger-scale solutions. The current means for producing yarn is the open end spinning method, which was developed in 1963.
