Who was the inventor of the railroad?

The railroad was first developed in Great Britain, with help of a man named George Stephenson, who invented the first successful steam powered locomotive in 1814. Stephenson created his own locomotive company named Stephenson Works, and the first steam engines used in the United States were purchased there.

By 1830, new railroads were developing swiftly, with Baltimore as the front runner in development. In 1827 the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad became the first railroad chartered in the United States. In 1869 the Central Pacific and the Union Pacific railroad companies came together to form the Transcontinental Railroad, which is one of the greatest feats of the 19th century.
