Iowa's official nickname is the Hawkeye State, a tribute to Chief Black Hawk, an Indian warrior and leader of the Sauk Indians. Iowa is also sometimes called the Corn State.

The name Hawkeye is derived from a character in James Fenimore Cooper's book, "The Last of the Mohicans." The Hawkeye State nickname was popularized by Iowa newspaper publisher James Edwards as a tribute to his friend, Chief Black Hawk. Officials of the Iowa Territory made the name official in 1838. The nickname the Corn State pays tribute to Iowa's corn crop. Iowa is the leading producer of corn in the United States.
