As a young boy, Theodore Roosevelt's nickname was "Teedie." As an adult, he became known as "Teddy." Although he never liked the name, it became forever linked to Ideal Toy Company's stuffed bear toy.
On a hunting trip Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear that had been tied to a tree, prompting the cartoonist Clifford Berryman to name it "Teddy's Bear." The Ideal Toy Company received permission from Roosevelt to use the name, and the Teddy Bear became one of the most popular stuffed animals in history.
Roosevelt became the President of the United States following the assassination of William McKinley in 1901.
