Jakarta is in Indonesia, on the northwestern coast of Java, at coordinates 6 degrees 12 minutes south and 106 degrees 49 minutes east. It is the capital city of Indonesia and one of the most heavily populated cities on earth. In 2012, it had a population of 9,761,407.
Now a bustling, vibrant and thoroughly modern city, Jakarta was the capital of Dutch East India beginning in 1619. The city was then named Batavia. Indonesia achieved its independence from the Dutch in 1946.
Jakarta has a monsoon climate and can get nearly 62 inches of rain just in its wet season, which lasts from October till May. Winter temperatures rarely fall beneath 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
