What are Japanese houses called?

A Japanese word for "house" is "uchi." In ancient Japan, there were two types of houses. One was a pit-dwelling house, and the second type of house was built with the floor raised above the ground.

In pit-dwelling houses, the columns are put into big holes dug into the soil. These columns are then surrounded by grass. The houses with elevated floors are traditionally used to store foods, such as grain, as being in contact with the ground may cause spoilage. In modern-day Japan, they have the "danchi," which refers to a large group of apartment buildings with similar styles and designs. These are usually built by a government authority for the public.
