The Japanese rhinoceros beetle is a large, herbivorous insect notable for the horn-like protrusions that extend from the heads of males in the species. It belongs to the subfamily Dynastinae and is a member of the family Scarabaeidae, or scarab beetles.
Capable of reaching a length of 6 inches, the Japanese rhinoceros beetle is found in parts of East Asia, such as Japan, Taiwan and Korea. It varies in color but is typically black, green or gray. The strength of this insect is famous, as it is capable of lifting over 850 times its body weight. This strength is used in digging and defense, either against predators or competing males.
