What is a garnet Japanese maple?

A garnet Japanese maple, Acer palmatum var. dissectum 'Garnet,' matures in an upright, pendulous mound and boasts red-orange dissected leaves in spring. The leaves retain their garnet color until midsummer, when they fade to purplish-green before turning red in the fall.

Japanese maples are deciduous shrubs that grow best in well-drained slightly acidic soils in full sun or part shade. The average height of a garnet Japanese maple is 6 to 9 feet, and its average spread is 8 to 12 feet. Native to Japan, Korea and China, Japanese maples are ideal for foundation planting, borders, screens, open woodland gardens or containers.
