During the Heian period in Japan, tatami mats were used as seating for aristocrats and the highest ranks of nobility. Any room that was completely covered by tatami was referred to as "zashiki." By the end of the 17th century, tatami mats became popular among commoners. The size of tatami mats varies depending on the region, and it typically ranges between 0.88 and 1.91 meters.
